Instagram launched its standalone short-form video editing tool, Edits, on Mac desktop computers on Thursday. Originally released on mobile last year, the desktop application caters to creators handling more complex video projects that require a mouse, keyboard, and larger screen space. [2][1]
The Mac version includes a full multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions, audio waveforms, multilingual automatic captions, and licensed audio libraries. Creators can export watermark-free videos in 4K resolution across vertical or horizontal formats, import custom font files, and customize keyboard shortcuts. Matthew Simari, head of product management for Edits, told The Verge that the desktop tool also features a Model Context Protocol integration, letting users connect their choice of artificial intelligence agent—such as Muse—to assemble and tweak video clips. The launch allows direct publishing to Instagram with native location tags and mentions, bypassing the need to transfer files back to a phone. Meta aims to challenge ByteDance's CapCut, which has offered desktop software for Windows and Mac since 2021. Instagram plans to release weekly software updates as it develops seamless cross-device project syncing for the more than 50 million creators who use the mobile app. [2]
