Rockstar Games could face pressure to release Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC earlier than past titles to protect against unauthorized artificial intelligence conversions, according to former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij. While the game is set to arrive first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Vermeij told Rock Paper Shotgun that studio leadership should be wary of third parties attempting to use generative AI to convert console builds for PC. [1][2][3]
Vermeij noted that building an unofficial port using AI tools would require substantial time and resources, estimating it could cost tens of thousands of dollars in tokens. Although he acknowledged that any machine-translated version would be inferior to an official release from Rockstar, he warned that unofficial ports, clones, or AI-enhanced emulators could still erode potential sales. Rockstar has not yet officially announced a PC version or confirmed release dates. However, analysts cited by KitGuru suggest a launch could occur as early as March 2026, with other projections estimating May 2026, marking a substantially narrower gap between platforms than previous entries such as Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
