Norwegian game developer Funcom is restructuring its workforce and cutting staff following the September 22 console launch of Dune: Awakening. The company is also changing leadership, with long-serving executive producer Scott Junior replacing Rui Casais as chief executive. Casais, who led the studio for 11 years, plans to step down by the end of the year. [1][2]
The job reductions mirror an earlier round of cuts that took place after the survival game debuted on PC. Funcom explained that it cannot sustain peak development staffing levels as Dune: Awakening transitions into post-launch live-service maintenance. The company stated it will withhold specific layoff figures until the restructuring process finishes. [1][2]
Going forward, Funcom intends to focus on the long-term support and growth of both Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles, pointing to its recent release of Conan Exiles' Enhanced edition. While Dune recently reached one million players across platforms, including Game Pass, live operations will be overseen by Junior, who previously managed live services for Age of Conan and The Secret World.
