Apple is updating its App Store Connect management platform on November 16 to require developers to declare whether software contains location sharing or dating and relationship features. Under the new rules, any app that enables romantic connections between real people or features a virtual companion engaging in romantic or sexual content will automatically receive an 18+ age rating. Developers must answer these declarations when submitting new releases or updates, and Apple expects all apps to comply by January 12, 2027. [1][2]
The mandate blocks adult-rated apps from appearing in the App Store for minors whose guardians have enabled device content limits. Furthermore, underage users who can view the listings must provide Apple with proof of adulthood if they attempt to download or buy them. Location sharing will not trigger age restrictions in most markets, though regional exceptions apply; in Brazil, location-sharing apps must carry at least an A16 rating, while dating tools require an A18 designation. Developers there can petition Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security for exceptions, such as for family-tracking tools. [1][2]
